Welcome to the Aristo Region, a quiet region north of Hoenn. It just so happens that your father and mother are the king and queen of this region. Just as you have turned 10 years old it is time for the Royal Contest to begin. Here you will journey out with your brother, Victor, and Sister, Alice, across the region to complete the gym challenge, all to decide who will become heir to the throne.

Notes
You can probably see how new I am to all of this and this community but I want to get involved as best I can. This is the first game I have ever worked on and I have had an amazing time doing it. I worked on this by myself other than having my girlfriend test basically everything. As I'm no good at art of any kind, there are no fully custom sprites in the game (which I would love) but I don't think it takes away from the experience of the game. I used to play Pokemon on Youtube years ago and have been playing it my whole life. I wanted to make a game that I was happy with and most importantly, a game that others can play and enjoy.
So please, give it a try, tell me what you think, and have fun!

Please inform me of any issues so I can sort them for you as soon as possible. I am continuing to work on the game and want to finish it as soon as possible.

I like the story setting ... made my brain go ham with ideas on what one could do with that ... I would have downloaded the demo right now but unfortunately I'm taking a break from Pokémon fan games right now due to exam period. I'll make sure to download and play it afterwards and come back with proper feedback though.

So here I am after playing the demo through ... or at least I think so ...

I really like the game and I had a lot of fun playing it ... you can really see how much effort went into it. The playthrough took me about 10 hours(2 of them in the casino and probably another one afk though). There was a discussion about whether gameplay or story are more important. This game is a nice example of story making a nice game. The gameplay is mostly essentials but the NPC dialogues are so good that it really makes the player understand and identify with the world.
Once the game is finished I'll definitely play it again.

I took some notes ... I describe my adventure ... There will be some critique between the lines but there's a list of good points of the game and things that could need improvement below.

This below is pretty much me describing the entire story and is pretty long ... I thought it might be interesting which parts of the game I did and which I may have overlooked ... which things I thought were memorable ... stuff like that

I started out as baby prince leilou in the palace. It was interesting but kinda offsetting because I couldn't really identify with the protagonist. Also the timeskip right afterwards made it feel irrelevant. Right after the timeskip to the 10 years old me I woke up in a massive room. It really stresses me being part of a rich family. I walked out of my chamber too have a look at the world and this is when I had my first meeting with my kind older sister telling me I had birthday and that dad had a present for all of us. After going downstairs and getting to choose my first Pokémon(Zorua because it's the cutest) my older brother whose personality kinda feels like a little brother beat me up. I didn't stand a chance against his Riolu. Afterwards the two of my siblings past right next to me by jumping over the trash can. I tried but sadly my jump power wasn't enough t do that ...

After that dissappointment I started my way out of the journey looking through all 3 houses in front of the palace and getting an exp share and hidden power. Equiped with those items Zorua and I walked into the first patch of grass and faced a Teddiursa which we barely beat(1 hp left). So we were forced to go heal. While walking I decided that I wanted to catch a Teddiursa. So back into the grass I caught a Spinarak because I like Ariados and had the exp share anyways. But the Teddiursa just didn't want to appear instead a shiny Spinerak appeared so I replaced mine with Shinarak(aren't I creative) and continued searching ... so my Zorua was level 14 when I finally caught my Tedy. Just to make fun of me the Pokémon that appeared right after on my way to heal my team was another Teddiursa.

Having 3 Pokémon and two of them overleveled reaching the end of route 1 was easy. At the end there were strangely arranged bushes that really didn't fit into the scenery. Going the only path that was possible through there my sister stopped me and we had our first battle. Since I was overleveled it was easy again. Right behind there was Majest Village. A village with lot's of Pokémon that I couldn't interact with :/ Also I really hate it when not Hoenn games are using the themes of the cities. Like that city is so not that theme for me ...(yes I'm all about Hoenn ... Hoenn was my childhood) Plus Vendaturf Town theme does not really fit the name Majest Village ...

I just went through that town real quick and found my 4th team member on route 2. It was an Eevee. And here I started really worrying about my team composition in regards to HMs. But I still had two more open spots so I just had to choose wisely. With these thoughts after clearing route 2 I had decide whether to go straight to the house(I don't know how these are called sry...) or up ... I decided to go up and ended up in a big city. It was really big and I immediately got lost. The main problem here was not the amount of people and houses but the amount of empty space. After a short while and after going into the houses I found the trainer school and earned my right to compete in the first arena.

Being pumpt about being able to gain my first badge I explored the rest of the houses and entered the arena. The design was a simple one. And after beating all the trainers in there I tried to go up and see where to go next. I saw a cut tree from below the arena from below so I went there but of course without cut I couldn't go on that way. So i continued exploring the surroundings and found a rocksmash rock that I couldn't smash either but I remembered that hut with the miners I think in it and got a pickaxe there. And that also solved my HM problem.

The rock was no opponent for my new pickaxe and so I went on and got a fire - ice Cyndaquil from my uncle. Weirdly it didn't have a follower sprite. And in the grass after I found one of my favorite Pokémon - a Shinx ... with all HM related worries gone I choose Sparky to get the final spot in my team. With Sparky and Cyndaquil I fought my brother Victor but his Dratini with Dragon Rage and being faster than all my Pokémon destroyed me. So I went on a little adventure to train. I wanted to go all the paths that I didn't go before.

But the path below Terra Town to the right was blocked with no text why ... so I went on to Majest Village to see what was going on there. I got a quest of a girl there to save the friendly water Pokémon at the beach from a crab invasion. Those crabs were easy prey for my sparky though. And so with some more levels and Hot Ice(Cyndaquil) that knew Powder Snow I went to Route 3 and upon entering it my game crashed with the following error message:

Luckily I had saved shortly before getting Hot Ice so I could go back to that point. Weirdly after getting him the second time he had a follower sprite ... so I don't know what went wrong the first time ... anyways ...

After training and evolving Hot Ice I rematched Victor and destroyed him and went exploring in Widow's cave and after a though fight against a guy with 6 fossils my Zorua, Shinarak and Sparky finally evolved ... and Shinarak following you looks so creepy! (it's ready for Halloween). I encountered Sheldon there(great reference ... I love it). And while the cave was long and hard my Team leveled up like crazy in there.

Weakened but with all Pokémon still awake I finally arrived at Ashbridge Town. Relieved of being able too heal soon I went into the Town and my sister Alice came and wanted to challenge me. Luckily someone over at the Pokémon Reserve screamed for help and I could go healing before continuing my adventure.

After healing in that philosophy Pokécenter (talking to that guy in front of the Pokécenter afterwards was like "ahh...that's why they were so deep") my team and I hurried to the reserve and together with Alice.

Without beating anyone we found a Commander of the evil Team Knight who was convinced that we beat all his grunts(lazy pack :D ) ... his fight melody was dope ... After winning that fight I got a Bulbasaur and went back to the city to explore it. Once I was done talking with everyone in the town(even the cat on the tree) I wanted to leave but Alice challenged me to have our battle that was postponed earlier. Since my party was fully healed I had no problems with defeating her.

A short route later I arrived in Green City. While I was searching for the Pokémon Center I stumbled across the casino. I immediately spent all my money to buy casino coins and played a while ... A while later(about 1-2 hours) I checked the prices and realized that there was a card game that i needed money for. So I sold all unimportant items to obtain the 5 cheapest cards for the Triple Triad game. Luckily I won my first few games and so I started getting good cards. A whole while later I went out to the city again to talk to everyone and discovered the water gym. I beat it and went back to the casino, bought me an Usaring card and played some more Triple Triad. I got strong cards pretty soon and was always stronger than my opponent. So I made a lot of money and went on with a lot more money than I had spent in the casino.

On my way through route 6 I saw the house and remembered all the NPCs saying that they are sorry for that man on route 6 ... so I was really curious getting through that maze that route 6 was. After finally managing to get to him I got a Machete witch is great because I can go left at Terra town now. Also after talking to him again he took me to an adventure which was pretty cool.

Being back at Terra town I immediately went to the Toxin Woods. I don't know why but somehow a lot of times in forests it rains ... so my fire attacks were kinda useless. And I said route 6 was a maze ... it was nothing compared to this forest ... at least I only got poisoned once. But I finally arrived in Venum City.

When I went through the city I found the fossil institute. When I tried to revive a fossil the following error appeared:

So I had to do halve of the forest again ... luckily I save a lot.

So ... after I arrived in the city again I went to the harbor and got pretty surprised when finding the gym there. But man ... I love the character of Captain Bane. So I entered the gym and battled the first guy there. I used Slash on my first round and he used Gunk Shot ... my Usaring got poisoned. When I tried to use Slash again the following Error occurred:

I still got to use Slash(in essentials if an error occurs in battle the message just shows and the game doesn't crash), won and continued to jump from ship to ship until I reached the gym leader and beat him. Continuing to talk to everybody(but not turning my fossil in this time) I made Venum City a better place by beating all 8 Eeveelutions and got an Old Rod. So I tried to fish on the bridge right next to the guy who told me that I needed a special permission to fish here to provoke him ... but he didn't seem to mind me fishing illegally ... but I didn't get anything anyways.

So without getting arrested for wildfishing I went on to route 9. As in the Toxin Woods I managed to get through there with nearly all my Pokémon in the red and arrived in Imperial City where I got my bike. I also went on an unexpected adventure there. As I was exploring the city I went into the daycare and when I exited I found myself at the exit of the day care of the essentials default map. Luckily I had obtained fly after the fight against Victor at the end of route 9. But sadly I didn't have any Pokémon caught that could fly. So I went to the default maps routes and discovered, that there were no Pokémon. Sad and desperate as I was because I thought I was stuck since I saved in the daycare I searched through all houses on the map and found a mew which could learn fly to my surprise. So I came back to Imperial City to continue exploring the region.

After that I shock and learning that the gym leader disappeared I went to the fire Pokémon reserve right next to the city. Victor waited there for me and foreshadowed an appearance of team knight at the reserve. But after investigating I only found the owner who gave me a Pokémon. Afterwards I went to see the Graveyard on route 9 that I didn't inspect on the way to Imperial City because my Pokémon were low. After finding the the temporal Ghastly I looked at the grass reserve. Not a sign of team knight either. I also went back home and couldn't access the resort and resort C wasn't accessible ... I also didn't get strength or surf ... so I'm either blind or the demo ends here.

Since I'm bad at writing those block texts and still getting everything across without boring every reader to death I'm just gonna list what I thought of as positive and what I think needs improvements ... I'm gonna try to explain it as well as I can too. (Warning: may contain spoilers and is mostly directed at the game dev)

I'll start in the beginning. With beginning I mean everything until you leave the palace. I really like the setting and the way you wrote the dialogues. The way the rooms are so big in the palace and the way your siblings behave so that the player get's their character. It really is a good start into the game and the player get's all important information in multiple ways. You do that multiple times later, too. For example with team knight, temporal Pokémon and the adventurer on route 6.

I also liked that multiple NPCs give you a choice ... even if it's clearly the same thing expressed in two ways sometimes.

Speaking of NPCs you got a lot of interesting and funny dialogues ... it's really great

I like how you made HMs items. So I didn't need to watch out which Pokémon I'll catch for my team.

The tripple triad mini game is great ... I played that for at least an hour ... probably a little more ... the only thing is that at some point the opponent wasn't strong enough anymore ... so I didn't get any good cards anymore and also won all the time.

I loved the references to big bang theory and the Pokémon anime series.

The minigames you threw in there. The adventure and the haunted house. It mixes things up but doesn't take too long so it isn't annoying.

The yellow tombstones at the graveyard mark the tombstones that the player can interact with. It encourages the player to interact with the world.

The level balancing in general was pretty good ... I often just barely made it through routes. Makes you feel more challenged during the routes and relieved after the routes which is great.

The next spoilers are things that I think that may be improved ... they may already be planned though ... please keep in mind that this is my personal opinion so if you disagree with a point then just ignore that point
the prof sprite in the beginning should be a kings sprite ... just to easier understand the setting.

I think that the introduction to your siblings in the intro is too much ... it would be enough to just have the setting of your own character because it's a lot of information. And just mentioning that you have two siblings would be enough I think.

Mom is adding "if I remember" when showing the room for the starter Pokémon ... she should know her own house good enough to be confident which room contains what...
This is just an suggestion and something that jumped into my eyes ... after getting my Pokémon and battling Victor both my siblings jump over the trash can to get out ... so it would be really cool if the player could jump over trash cans.

There are often decorations in front of windows in houses. Like the shelf in my chamber could just be not there. Or in the Eeveelution siblings houses the window could just be shifted one to the left.

When I went out of my house I was a little disappointed ... what I expected was a nice little park in front of the palace ... some flowers and a fountain in the middle ... something like this:


in route 1 the trainers Pokémon level are a below the wild Pokémon level. That just doesn't feel right.

The bushes blocking the way at the end of route 1 look kinda bad ... it would probably be better to have the whole line trigger the event with Alice.

When talking to overworld Pokémon they do their cry but don't turn towards the player. It also would be beneficial to have them to talk to the player with text because lot's of players just play without sound.

At majest beach there is a quest and before you didn't defeat the first 3 you can't go to the last crab with the explanation that there a still Pokémon to save while hindering you to save the 4th Pokémon that you can clearly see ... that explanation is just not logical

The first time I got my Cyndaquil it didn't have it's backsprite and some time later the game crashed due to follow pokemon:

There is no encounter music when a trainer challenges you. Aki wrote a great text about that here: Weekly Discussion: User Experience
Same goes for the Pokémon not talking to you.

I think the encounter rate for some Pokémon is too high. I searched for about 20 minutes for a Tediursa. That may require to have some Pokémon to not be wild encounters anymore.

Having more objects being able to interact with you would be nice. I talked to everything in my room and even the more obvious places like the notebook of the girl telling me about the typing advantages or the school board. More interaction encourages more exploration.

The couches and chairs are not passable while they should be in my opinion. (couches just from the front)

The passage between Terra Town and Cherish Island is blocked with no interaction possible ... this may be due to it not being in the demo but a little notice would be nice.

The trainer to rebattle before Terra Town is not good for training. Trying to train a bit to beat the gym I went to him but he had only low level Pokémon that don't give much xp. On top of that they kept on paralyzing me.

Temporal Pokémon are introduced as Pokémon from different time zones. I thought they were from like different regions in a different time zone ... but it turns out they are from the past like from a different era. So maybe change the choice of words there.

While themed trainers are cool a party of 6 is a lot. The guy with 5 Magicarps would have been fine with just 3 ... the fossil guy battle also felt pretty long. Either a double battle or two separate battles would have been better here I think.

I really like Triple Triad ... but after getting good cards with double 6 stats the games are no challenge anymore because your opponent just gets a lot weaker cards ... I think that algorithm needs to be changed. I played that mode for more than an hour and would have played it way longer if it would have stayed challenging.

After beating the Eeveelution siblings you get an Eevee as prize which feels pretty underwhelming if you already have one on your team. So I would suggest removing Eevee from the wild encounters to fix that.

In the waters of Venum City there are no Pokémon to fish. At least I didn't find any ... if I was just unlucky than everything is fine ... but if there aren't there should be some added since it's the city where you get the fishing rod after all.

In route 9 the wild Pokémon are kinda low. They were 15 levels below mine and like 10-13 below the trainers level. So maybe raise the wild Pokémon level a bit.

I noticed that the statues at the entrance of the gyms didn't note the names of the people that beat the leader. It does that in the main series.
I noticed that the cities contain a lot of houses that cannot be entered ... it would probably be better to keep the cities smaller. I really got a shock when I first entered Terra Town. Also in Terra Town some of the interiors of the houses seemed too big.

Some times when the trees don't line up there were some other types of trees or bushes to block the path. But they had the opposite effect and made me investigate whether I could somehow get to that passage. So shifting the tree there to perfectly fit would look a lot better.

In the intro your mom say "how should we name them" while that should be him/her.

Zoruas follow Pokémon sprite is too high.

The music volume is not balanced. i couldn't listen to all music because I had turned it down because of the battle music being so loud(my poor ears the first battle). My tip is to play your game with headphones and every time you need to adjust the volume for the music to feel at perfect volume to listen to it it's off.

At route 3 you can reach the boarder of the map. If you go right after going upstairs behind the smashrock(left is the cave) you can reach it. If you go down there you can also see your uncle.

Some battle front sprites are too high. I think this is a problem with newer gen Pokémon.

In Terra Town school you can go higher at the board than at the wall .

Widow's Caves name is missing on the town map.

The player can walk on the tables ok the houses right and left above the Pokécenter in Ashbridge Town.

Water gym ladders into the water have a still water instead of the ones with waves and additionally it reflects the player sprite while the rest of the water doesn't.

The groomers husband calls his wife husband ... could be transdessing though ;)

You can walk up the cliff under the bridge at route 9. If you go to the second bridge from Imperial City and go beneath it and then go downwards you'll be one layer up. That works every time a bridge has that setting on that route.

This one is minor but if you're right of the graveyard at route 9 the map shows the player being right below the graveyard.

If you exit the daycare in Imperial City you find yourself in front of the daycare of the default maps.
In the fossil institute if you try to convert a fossil it throws an error:
