Introduction

“Pokémon Essentials GSC” is a tool kit which allows to create Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal-style fangames. It uses as a base Pokémon Essentias v18.1. This is not just and upgrade from the old v13 Pokémon Essentials GS kit, because it brings new features, polishes obsolete stuff and fixes many bugs, UIs and details to fit almost perfectly GSC-style games.

Features
  • An engine already prepared to work on a GBC screen resolution and GSC-style. All stuff included tries to follow in detail the whole visuals and features from Gen II games.
  • Pokémon sprites adapted to respect GSC sizes (until Gen II); new devamped sprites for Gen 3+ Pokémon and new party icons for each species from all Generations.
  • A bunch of new attack animations and graphics that will serve you to create your own.
  • “Day & Night Cycle” using a Tile-Swap system.
  • Updated general UIs to support new features, like abilities, natures or Evs, and also tweaked the existing ones for GSC visual accuracy, like the Pokégear, Trainer Card, the Pokédex or the Pack. New Storage System!
  • Battle UI improvements to not just to follow GSC-style, but also to support:
  • Double battles! (triple battles are coded in Essentials since v18 comes out, but due to the smaller screen resolution, it’s impossible to make triple battles "visually comfortable").
  • Mega Evolution.
  • Safari Zone and Bug Catching Contest (also fixed errors from the older Essentials GS version).
  • Functional Pokémon battle and extra features until Generation 8: abilities, items, moves and Pokémon; Fairy type, Move Relearner, Shadow Pokémon, Ready Menu for register items and much more!
  • Many GSC music themes and SFX resources to further recreate the essence of Generation II games.
  • Removed some unused content which wasn’t on GSC games and it’s not useful for most fangames: Markings and Ribbons.
  • Other improvements and extra stuff: Headbut trees now can be defined using a Terrain Tag; PBS data are already prepared to work with the screen resolution (items, abilities and moves descriptions); now you can see moves effects in the Summary Screen pressing Z button; the Pokédex Search follows the GSC-style (types only); the Pokédex Entry page supports Pokémon descriptions of any extension...
  • Included Turbo Mode (Pressing ALT key).
  • MKXP: run gameplays at 60fps!
GSC_Scans.png

What's still missing?
  • Pokémon sprites from Generation 3 onwards.
  • Battle Transitions Animations (still working on that).
  • Some minigames like Voltorb Flip, Mining or Triad Card are not available yet, because they are from later on Generations. Battle Frontier and Purify Chamber aren't ready either. Mystery Gift doesn’t work properly yet.
In the future I will update this content with patches or newer versions. For sprites and graphics resources I’ll leave some links to access for everyone who wants to get more resources before the update.

Despite all this, the engine is ready to create a GSC-style Pokémon game with all the essential features.

Known Issues
  • Some attack animations may look out of place because of the screen resolution which the animation editor works with, which is not exactly the same as the game’s one. Still working on that, but most of them look fine.
There may be some more bugs or things that don’t work as they should, as this is not a final version, but a solid one. If you have any suggestions, errors or improvements to report, you can post them here or contact me directly.

If you want to contribute with sprites or scripting help, send me a DM.

This is honestly really cool! I was wanting to make the Ultra Necrozma battle in Gen 1/2 style, and know I actually may! Great job!

Very impressive work. It's a little rough around the edges, but nevertheless, it's an overall improvement from the old GS Essentials Kit. Good job to everyone involved with the project

Made an account just to say how awesome this is and cannot thank everyone who worked on this enough! I just started playing around with Essentials last week, so the timing for me was impeccable because of how much I love GEN 2 and that this was released right at the same time I started basically. Thanks again!

Hello again and thank you all for the comments and the support!

I'm working back again on the kit and I was thinking about updating it to v19.1 because it has many interesting features which I think could improve the kit in every sense.

One of the changes/updates could be using a different font. Default's GSC one is unwieldy and difficult to use, so I was testing with a less wide and more aesthetic font, and I wanted to know which one do you prefer or which one do you think is better. I want to know if it looks better with capitalized or non-capitalized texts.

Pokémon Essentials GSC has been updated to v1.1

Download it here --> Pokémon Essentials GSC v1.1

I've also created a Discord server to create a community for all of those who use this kit, resolve doubts, share creations and give facilities to the people who want to create their own GSC-style project!

You can join using this link --> Pokémon Essentials GSC Discord Server

The main post has been tweaked

  • MKXP installed: now supports 60fps gameplay and the game runs smoother.
  • Improved GSC font: supports more text characters and they can be printed with their original form/key. Exceptions: texts ":L" (@), "PoKé" (~€), "Pk" "Mn" ({ + }). The font now is lighter than before and fully customizable using an external editor like BitFontMaker2.
  • Added more Pokémon sprites devamps.
  • Party Icons: now there are for all Pokémon of all generations!
  • Many bug fixes and general core improvements.
  • Partially fixed the Battle Frontier, now its functional at least.
  • Included an intuitive background for a more comfortable sprites positioning.

Enjoy!
