The concept of this thread is simple: post something for feedback, and or give feedback to others. If you want to get some quick feedback on plot ideas or game design elements before you even start your game or if you have a thread, this is the place to do so. If you're thinking about starting your own thread for your project but need some help determining if your first post is up snuff, this is also an ideal place for you to do that too.
Please keep the following in mind while using this thread:
If you notice something that has been posted but hasn't received any feedback, please consider providing the poster with some form of feedback before you move onto later posts.
Put some thought and effort into your feedback. While not all short feedback is bad, generally you want to make sure you're offering something worthwhile to the person requesting feedback.
On a similar note, make sure what you're requesting feedback on has some substance to it. You don't have to provide multiple paragraphs explaining your idea, but don't be vague and leave nothing for anyone to comment on!
Be respectful and civil. This thread isn't an excuse to be rude to another person or to tell them their idea is bad, be helpful instead.
While this thread is meant for general feedback, Relic Castle also has other threads for feedback on screenshots, maps, and such. If what you're seeking feedback on is more suited there, please post it in the appropriate thread:
This is simply something small compared to my other things, but I just tweaked it to perfection, and I figured I'd share it with others.
It's basically my rendition of the Exp.Point formula, specifically the scaled one (a.k.a. the higher level the winning Pokemon, the less experience it gets).
The formula is this:
Where, in alphabetical order (alterations in bold):
a is equal to...
1.5 if the fainted Pokemon is owned by a Trainer.
1 if the fainted Pokemon is wild.
b is equal to...
the base experience yield of the fainted Pokemon.
e is equal to...
1.5 if the winning Pokemon is/was holding a Lucky Egg.
1.25 if the Pokesword is/was containing a Lucky Egg.
1.875 if both conditions apply.
1 if otherwise.
f is equal to...
1.2 if the winning Pokemon has 2 or more hearts in Affection.
1 if otherwise.
L is equal to...
the level of the fainted Pokemon.
Lp is equal to...
the level of the winning Pokemon.
1 if the battle is considered "important", such as Gyms, friends and/or rivals, antagonists, important characters, and the Elite Four & Champion.
p is equal to...
1 if no Exp. Point Power is active.
If Exp. Point Power [x] is active...
0.5 for ↓↓↓, 0.66 for ↓↓, 0.8 for ↓, 1.2 for ↑, 1.5 for ↑↑, or 2 for ↑↑↑, S, or MAX.
s is equal to...
1 when calculating the experience of a Pokémon that participated in battle.
2 when calculating the experience of a Pokémon that did not participate in battle and if Exp. Share is turned on.
t is equal to...
1 if the winning Pokémon's current owner is its Original Trainer.
1.5 if the Pokémon was gained in a domestic trade.
1.75 if the Pokémon was gained in an international trade. (was 1.7)
v is equal to...
1.2 if the winning Pokémon is at or past the level where it would be able to evolve, but it has not.
1 if otherwise.
Note 1: If multiple Pokemon are defeated at the end of the turn, the EXP. is calculated for each defeated foe, then awarded to the winning Pokemon in a combined fashion.
Note 2: If a Pokemon reaches Lv.100 but is therefore unable to evolve by level, then the Pokemon can go through the Elite Four again, and if healthy, is guaranteed to recieve a chance to evolve at the end.
Also, for post-game purposes, I wanted to figure out the best base experience yield for the Elite Four to have, in order to make grinding easier.
Before we get to the nitty-gritty math, we need to set some baseline stuff:
We are assuming that there are 26 Pokemon to defeat through a single run of the Elite Four.
We are also assuming that the average level of those 26 Pokemon are Lv.70 or higher after the main game or some specific story event.
This will use the altered formula displayed above.
Now that we have those out of the way, we need to set a goal. What we want is for every Pokemon who can evolve by level to be able to no matter what. So what that means is that thanks to Hydreigon, we are shooting for enough experience to get any Pokemon to at least a nice round Lv.65. According to Bulbapedia's experience table, the amount of experience we need to achieve that for any Pokemon is 351,520 or 13,520 for each Pokemon, which if you're using the Gen.VI+ Exp.Share, needs to be doubled, so that's 27,040 experience points.
With that information, we plug that in for ΔEXP, and assuming that we are at base minimum parameters, we can assume that a is equal to 1.5, Lp is equal to 1, L is equal to 70, and all other variables (excluding b, because that's what we want to solve) are equal to one. With that, we can calculate the base experience yield needed for each member of the Elite Four.
Now I wish I can easily show this with the format of the Relic Castle posts, but it's not exactly friendly with equations (as far as I'm aware), so to cut the chase, if we do the math and solve for b, what we get is a base experience yield of 552, which according to Bulbapedia, is unfortunately only accessible if all 26 foes are Blissey, which won't do us very good.
So it looks like it can only happen through multiple runs of the Elite Four, so let's assume two runs for now. For two runs we now need at least 13,520 experience points, and if we do the math, we get a base experience yield of 275. Which, is only available through Mega Evolutions and Legendaries.
Okay, so lets try for three runs of the Elite Four, which if we divide 27,040 by three, we get 9015 experience points. If we do the math once again, we finally achieve the number we've been searching for: a base experience yield of 184.
Alright, so what does this mean, and what Pokemon have this number? What this means is that assuming the three baseline requirements are met, if every Pokemon at the Elite Four has a base experience yield of 184 or more, then through three runs of the Elite Four we can level up any Pokemon to Lv.65 no matter what.
And as for which Pokemon have this number, there's actually a pretty big chunk of Pokemon who meet the requirements.
Those Pokemon are:
All fully evolved starter Pokemon (including Ash-Greninja) {range of 236-288}
All Eeveelutions {all 184}
All Mega Evolutions (excluding Sableye, Mawile, and Medicham) {203-425}
All pseudo-legendaries (a.k.a. Garchomp, Dragonite, etc.) {all 270}
All Legendaries (excluding any from Gen.VII, for some reason) {216-351}
Soooo, that's about it, really. This is honestly trivial and minor information, but it's neato nonetheless.
P.S. For SOME REASON, Pokemon Sun & Moon does not account for variations in the variable a. In layman's terms, what this means is that the experience gained from a Trainer battle is the same as a wild battle, which is NOT a thing in every single game previously. I know, it both baffles and enrages me too.
EDIT: Okay, so I just checked, and if one wished to achieve this trick with the flat Experience formula, assuming minimum parameters and if every Pokemon were Lv.70 and had a base experience yield of 184 or higher, you would need to do at least NINETEEN runs of the Elite Four to get any Pokemon to Lv.65. Clearly we can see which formula is superior in this situation.
That's a fantastic formula, and you explained it amazingly in-depth! And I know that list of Pokemon for the Championship will be super useful for planning!
Thank you for the support! I'm thinking of including wild pokemon battles during, like, berry searching or something, and maybe some plot-related battles. There just won't be any gyms. I want to think of some interesting mechanic for the breeding contests to make up for it but it's early brainstorming days.
Yeah, I would definitely say battles should be a thing, both wild and trainer. Part of being a breeder is raising a strong Pokemon to then breed. And you do get stronger by battling. No Gyms wouldn't be a problem, but you could probably add something similar to the RSE and DPPt contests in instead, as well as some other events for different traits for breeded Pokemon. Like fastest Pokemon, or strongest, or something such as that.

True, I was thinking of having multiple stages/criteria for the contests inspired DPPt. Like pokemon's condition/appearance, a move performance from traditional contests, and then battles, more like the contests from the anime.
And I imagine different trainer's will bring in their pokemon to the day care for different reasons. Like a contest star might come in and ask you to improve the pokemon's condition, another might ask you to improve their EVs, etc. It's all in the very early stages of course.
Anyone got any tips for choosing what music to put in your fangame? I dont know all the pokemon tracks ever. My region in my game is going to be based off Scandinavia but mostly Finland. Anyone know any good pokemon tracks or other video game tracks that would fit well in a region like that or just in general?
It's hard to tell someone what music they should pick-the general idea of a region doesn't tell me what your towns or routes are like, and even with more specific designs in mind, what I think the atmosphere of a map is might not be the atmosphere you want. I'd suggest just listening to the canon soundtracks (or soundtracks from other games, or even instrumental music that's never been used in a game, as long as you give credit) and seeing what tracks match the feeling you want for your maps. Nobody knows them like you do!

couldnt have said it better myself, it's your game, put what music in your game you think fits, music you like no matter what the genre is may not be what everybody else in the world is gonna like, but you gotta go by your ear.
All of the remixers I know (and I think most in general) are cool about people using their remixes for games, though asking anyway is definitely the courteous thing to do. And you should absolutely give them credit in the finished game, or even (I'd argue) if the game never gets finished - make a note in Scene_Credits as soon as you download the audio file or at least drop a credits.txt next to Game.rxproj.
That's interesting that someone would do that, personally if one of my sources asked not to be credited I'd just credit "anonymous" or "someone who wished not to be named." Did someone actually do that? I'm curious as to why.

It's not uncommon for rippers to say they don't need credit; I've said I prefer to be uncredited for resources where I put in work to format something but didn't make a creative contribution.
It's as Tech said ... if someone said "You don't need to credit me" I would give credit. But if someone said "I'd prefer to not be credited" then I wouldn't. Like why do something the guy who contributed to your game doesn't want ... I would always include or exclude somebody if they change their opinion in that topic ... like even silently push a new version of the game with altered credits.
So, this seems like as good a time as any for me to get this off my chest.
I have ideas for a game. Good ideas. The thing is, I have too many ideas. And absolutely zero experience with using Pokemon Essentials. At all.
I don't just want to learn how to use Pokemon Essentials. I also want to learn how to use RPG Maker, period. Someday, I want to make games. Original games (I'm not dumb enough to say 'real games' in a forum for Pokemon fangames; Pokemon fangames are as real as any other games). Something that's fully mine, something I can sell.
But I have to start somewhere, and that's pretty much what I'm asking. Where's the best place to go to start learning how to use RPG Maker (Pokemon Essentials and/or otherwise) on entry level?
I've often found that the best way to start is to just get right on into it! Everyone learns differently, so it's kinda hard to give you an exact rundown-there might be some things you need explained, and other things you pick up immediately and don't need to be taught. By getting hands-on with the system, you can figure out what you need to learn more of!
I've also heard this YouTube series is pretty helpful!

totally watch Thundaga's series on youtube, he helps a LOT with Essentials and gives out protips like making sure you take a look at everything and see how they work, so that you can create some of your own stuff, like events, new pokemon, etc.
I need help with making a tileset template where I can place tiles for the game, like the ones with those checker-boarding as the background. Also if you didn't already know from the noob question I'm very new to spriting and have never done spriting, any advices and tips would also be appreciated.
Edit: Don't know if this is the right thread for this question.
