(Download link.) **New version with updates to chapter 2.

(Imgur album with screenshots.)

This project, my first project, is the result of roughly 700+ hours of work over the past year. I actually completed the game through the end, but I decided to completely revamp the game starting from the beginning. The goal was to create an "authentic" Pokemon experience, including mapping and dialogue. Unfortunately I've had to recycle most sprites, as this has been a solo project and spriting isn't a talent of mine.

Rather than using badges, the game is split into 10 chapters, with 5 of those chapters being playable in the beta. If you do everything, I'd expect there to be roughly 12-15 hours of playtime for the average player. Pokemon from gen 1 through 3 are available, as well as anything from gen 4 that evolves from a gen 1-3 Pokemon (with a few other exceptions). The 3 starters available are Chikorita, Mudkip, and Charmander, but the other 6 starters appear in the game as well. The aim for difficulty for the game is to be more difficult than a regular Pokemon game, but not frustratingly so on the level of a Kaizo game.

I wanted to put this out at the halfway point to get some player feedback and see what needs to be changed. So please, if you take the time to play the game, please leave a comment with what you liked or didn't like! In the post-game credits, I will be crediting anyone who playtests the game and provides feedback.

I would also gladly accept any character sprite contributions that anyone might have, right now the player characters are really just the sprites from FR/LG. Obviously you would be credited for your work. As I said, spriting isn't my strong suit, and I would welcome anyone who wants to contribute any art to the project.

Okay, just a suggestion: the 3D model on your title screen on the complete black with the flat cyan bar behind your name is really jarring and kinda breaks immersion. I feel like it'd look more like the generational style you're going for with something like the R/S/E title screens, or maybe with it flying like in Gold and Silver, but the 3D model just doesn't mesh with the rest of your game.

I'm really enjoying the game so far, but I encountered a bug while playing.

During my battle with Lazlo, his Slugma used Harden and the game froze and saved mid-battle. Whenever I start it up now, my game makes me walk down and to the right of where Lazlo is, and I'm unable to move at all.

Thanks for the feedback, I do agree it's a bit out of place, I think I will eventually transition to a title screen that better reflects the art style of the actual gameplay.

C:\Users\[yourUserNameHere]\Saved Games\Pokemon Winter is where your save file is, but also a file called errorlog.txt (granted, you may want to backup your save files in the future). Does this file have any contents from the crash? If so, it would really help troubleshooting. That's a super bizarre error, I've never seen an error inside of an actual battle (I haven't changed battle code at all, so it is likely just an error with Pokemon Essentials), but I'll try to replicate it.

In the meantime, if you haven't restarted the game, I can try to send you a version of the game that will teleport you back to the previous room so you can continue if you'd like that.

EDIT: I tried replicating the crash, couldn't get it to happen. Offer still stands though if you want me to try to salvage your save file.

Hey again, so I'm looking for some feedback on my chapter 2 town: Parvus Town. It's one of the oldest maps in my project, and I strongly feel like it needs an update but haven't been happy with anything so far.

The old map:
It's very square with a lot of empty space. Some places are hard to maneuver, and it can be difficult to get from point A to point B.

Here is my proposed new map:
More of a clean, standard Pokemon town with Challenger's Cave clearly separated from town. Encounters from within the town have been moved to the path of the "dig site".

Personally I think the new map is better, but I'm still looking for opinions. Thanks!
