All right, let's do this.

So a few people may remember the train wreck curiosity that was Pokémon Shadow Unbound that I was doing a year-ish ago. And that I gave it up and stuff when Nintendo started being a butt about copyright. Well, I recently realized that I'm still working on it,it's just an original game now! . . . mostly.

Introduction

Drem yol lok, I'm making games. Still using Game Maker Studio for this, mainly because I'm insane, and because I'm not a real game dev and don't know how Unreal Engine works.

Plot

Birds are getting hurt and you're motivated to find out why. Still basically a glorified fetch quest.

Features

These are all probably in it for the long haul. Don't want to promise anything because I happen to be really good at breaking promises, but I like how they work so I'm not very inclined to cut any at the moment. Yes I copied and pasted a lot of these from psu leave me alone.

- Play as a boy, girl or owl
- Play as a pigeon, blue jay, eagle, owl, phoenix, duck and whatever else I feel like letting you play as
- There's a fancy loading graphic at the beginning
- Because I evidently hate my life, this game is going to be in full, first-person 3D (those of you who are familiar with Game Maker know that's not a thing that sane people generally say) and therefore shouldn't confine the player to a grid. I'm doing this mainly because I want to add another, well, dimension to exploration of the world. See the screenshots for details
- Game should run relatively smoothly. If you're playing it, keep an eyeball on the performance stats on the side and let me know how it goes. It's definitely more hardware-intensive than psu was, though
- The fourth wall is actually not broken when it would be inappropriate to do so
- It probably won't hurt anyone, so if you're bored, or feel like figuring out how the game works, or get stuck in a wall and are in a charitable mood, you can hit F2 and start messing around. Right click+F2 again to break out of debug mode and teleport the player to where the camera is
- Change the UI color(s)
- Fancy title screen, sort of, I guess. It was fun to make even if it looks like rubbish, okay?
- Day/night system, plus you can change the rate at which time passes
- Character customization, sort of
- Skyrim ribbon compass

Screenshots

The beginning of the game.

Bird rescue, or not.

Your boss.

Character customization.

Play as a blue jay.

Soar over the landscape.

Recruiting

This thread is archived now but still applies.

Download

0.0.0.3: Game Maker Interpreter
More stable, but slower. You probably want to play this one first. Oh, and if it crashes the error messages are usually fairly helpful.
0.0.0.3: Game Maker Compiler
Faster, but I can't promise it won't crash with a wonderfully unhelpful error message. You probably only want to play this if you experience performance issues with the Interpreted version.

Notes

Right now I'm kind of looking for people to fool around with it and find ways to crash it . . . although hopefully not too many ways to crash it. Also, if you get physically stuck you can hit F2 to go into an editor which lets you throw around 3D objects and a couple other things which may or may not work. You can zoom around with WASD like usual, and turn the camera with Middle Mouse. You can hit Right Mouse + F2 to jump the player to where the camera is in the editor - useful if you manage to clip through the terrain geometry or fall below z=0.

Known Oversights

- The icon and graphics around the compass are a paw print. Paw prints are not bird-related. I'll fix that later.
- When you enter a new area, even if it has the same music set as the area you just left, the music will restart.
- The camera sometimes has weird moments when latching onto NPCs and other entities.
- Most of the treasure chests are empty.
- The camera can clip through the sides of the walls sometimes. This is rather annoying. I don't think it's usually possible to get stuck though. If you do get stuck try button mashing to get out, I'm not kidding.
- The launcher may or may not work, I haven't touched it since implementing it.
- Sometimes doors "open" the wrong way.

- Not all of the sidequests are in working order. The main quest should be playable from start to finish.

This is not an oversight but people seem to think it is?

- You're not allowed to swim. Find other ways to get across the water.

Credits

This is going to be a weird section.

- I still have a couple Pokémon resources in here (mainly in the form of textures) from when I did the Save As; for that, I have Spiky's DS Map Editor to thank. However, I'm in the process of getting rid of these as to avoid copyright annoyances.
- A couple sound effects come from YouTube's audio library (some bird calls, the toilet flush, etc). The rest were made by me.
- Bird sprites are from this guy. I'm 95% sure those are only supposed to be used within RPG Maker though, so I'll have to replace those eventually as well (if you look closely a few of them have "not final art" printed over them).
- Music is from opengameart, mainly by this dude called Matthew Pablo.
- YoYo Games owns Game Maker.
- Other programs used: Game Character Hub, Model Creator for Game Maker, sfxr, Audacity, Photoshop, probably a few more. Also Model Creator's source code basically taught me how to do 3D rotations.
- Jayrodd's still an on-and-off consultant person guy, TechSkylander and my brother did a bunch of writing stuff.

- The rest of the stuff (namely code) was made by me.

I've been following this game from your youtube channel, and I've got to say, it is weird seeing you go from 3d pokemon game to 3d bird game. Not that it's a bad thing, just more interesting.

I think what I'm looking forward to most about this, aside from the collecting aspect, would be the cool environment you'll be able to make in a 3d setting. Can't wait to go mountain climbing to find some hawk or something (idk much about birds)

Good luck man, I hope to see this completed.

Thank you! In a few weird ways it's come full circle though, when this was still Pokémon it was a pretty field-move-centric game and now it's kind of the same thing . . . just with real birds instead of Pokémon.

It should be fun to make.
